Barinas is named for the family farm where this coffee is grown, whose story begins in 1820 with the arrival of Mrs. Theodora Jacinta and family in Araxá, carrying with them the letter of Sesmaria da Manioca. It's a fitting namesake for a coffee shaped by five generations of the same family's commitment to the land.
In 1950, Alberto Castro Alves, father of Marcio Borges Castro Alves, began planting coffee, becoming one of the pioneers of the region. With an economist's and administrator's eye, he built the farm around diversification, integration, professionalism, and strategic partnerships. The family faced a severe setback in 1975, when a hard frost burned every plant on the property, but the loss only deepened their resolve, and the passion for coffee brought Barinas back to become the model it is today. Now in its fifth generation, the farm continues to produce coffee of remarkable intensity and character. This lot is Topazio, a cross of Mundo Novo and Yellow Catuai first selected by the Instituto Agronômico (IAC) of São Paulo in Campinas during the 1960s. This is a variety valued for high productivity and even cherry maturation, and especially well suited to the climate of Minas Gerais.
What to Expect:
This coffee opens with milk chocolate and vanilla, balanced by rich toffee sweetness and a bright dried orange finish. It's a lively, layered take on a Cerrado Mineiro Natural, with the sweetness and body the region is known for.
Brewing Recommendations:
Filter: A clean cup with milk chocolate and vanilla up front, brewing well across most filter methods.
Espresso: Rich and syrupy, with toffee sweetness and dried orange brightness rounding out a smooth finish.
Roasting Schedule:
We roast each Monday and ship retail orders on Tuesday morning. Ordering cut-off each week is 5pm CST each Sunday for the next roast day.
